The impact of homecare nursing is not one-sided.
At Family First Homecare, we often talk about the difference our nurses make in the lives of patients and their families, but the impact goes both ways. In a profession as emotionally charged and fulfilling as pediatric homecare nursing, it’s important to remember that the work we do touches us just as much as it touches those we care for. Nurses often give selflessly, but the rewards — in terms of personal growth, joy, and deep human connection — are profound and deeply impactful.
One of our very own nurses, Joan, shares a heartwarming story about how her career in pediatric homecare helped her rediscover the true spirit of the season — and how she found both joy and purpose in a year that seemed determined to take both away.
Joan’s Story: A Heartwarming Journey into the Christmas Spirit
“I always loved Christmas. Silver and Gold, Ribbons & Bows.
But 2023 was not shaping up as joyful.
For all my life, Christmas was family. But in 2023, I had no family. My rock, cook, plumber friend, brother had died. He always put up my tree, baked the cookies, and cooked dinner. Now, no tree, no cookies, no dinner.”
But life has a way of surprising us when we least expect it. A call from Family First Homecare gave Joan an opportunity that would change everything.
“Family First offered me a special assignment.
A Make-A-Wish child. My heart grew three sizes that day! I won’t be alone after all. I could spread joy and share happiness.
December 24th arrived. Charissa, her family, and I hit it off immediately. We went to work planning our red outfits and necessary treats for Christmas morning. We also planned our trip to Clearwater.”
Why Pediatric Homecare Nursing Matters
Joan’s story is just one example of how the role of a pediatric homecare nurse goes beyond medical care. While our nurses provide the highest level of care, they also become a part of the families they serve, creating bonds that last a lifetime. The impact of pediatric homecare nursing is not just one-sided; it flows in both directions, enriching the lives of both the patients and the nurses.
For Joan, this assignment was a gift that gave her back the spirit of Christmas and reminded her of why she chose this profession in the first place. Pediatric homecare nursing isn’t just about tending to medical needs. It’s about healing hearts, creating memories, and making a real difference in the lives of families — and in your own life as well.
